13 Features that will give iPhones an EDGE over Android Smartphones
Apple announced its next big software release — iOS 12 — at the recently-concluded Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2018. Apple iOS powers company’s iPhone and iPad range. The all-new iOS 12 brings new features to improve performance and also enhance users’ experience on iPhones and iPads. During the WWDC 2018 keynote, Apple mocked Google saying that while the current Android release has got an install base of just 6%, around 81% Apple devices run on version on iOS 11 (the current version of iOS).
Google too showcased the next big software update for Android phones at its I/O 2018 developer conference. Dubbed Android P, it too offers a slew of new features and enhancements. Both iOS 12 and Android P aim to offer superior experience to users. Both have some features that are missing in the other OS. Here are 13 iOS 12 features that are missing in the upcoming version of Android.
A smarter voice assistant (Siri) with shortcuts
Apple has upgraded Siri to allow it to control third-party apps without users actually opening them. Users can also assign their own voice commands to trigger different actions. A single command too can be set for multiple actions. In Android, users do not have the option to set Google Assistant shortcuts for third-party apps.
Apple browser to protect you from being ‘tracked’ on Facebook, Twitter and more
While Google Chrome has no measure to prevent cookies from tracking your browsing habits, in iOS 12, Apple’s Safari browser has Intelligent Tracking Prevention that helps block social media ‘Like’ or ‘Share’ buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission.
iOS 12 has Memojis, Android P still offers emojis
Stock Android P is yet to get Animojis while iOS 12 has graduated to Memojis. In Android, the entire emoji-race is dependent on individual OEMs.
FaceTime with up to 32 people simultaneously
With iOS 12, the FaceTime app has received a significant upgrade. Users can video chat with 32 people simultaneously. Also, the FaceTime app will automatically detect and highlight the person who is talking in the group of 32 people.
Older iPhones to get faster while Android P will hardly reach older
Apple has claimed that its iOS 12 update will give a performance boost to older iPhones starting with the iPhone 5S. On the other hand, Google’s latest Android operating system hardly reaches to older Android phones.
Dedicated button for ‘Do Not Disturb’
While both Google and Apple have focused on “digital health” in Android P and iOS 12 respectively, Apple has implemented it better. The new iOS 12 has a dedicated button in the control center. In Android P, the DND mode is a bit hidden and it is not readily available like in iOS 12.
Measure app for measuring real-life objects
Apple showcased that using its ‘Measure’ app on iOS 12, users can actually measure dimensions of real-life objects through AR and the camera. While Android P teases a lot about augmented reality, real-life useful cases are missing.
FaceID can support two different faces for unlocking
Apple allows users to record two Face IDs for better facial recognition in its iOS 12. So, you can record a face without sunglasses and another one with sunglasses. Android P still allows users to record only one face for security.
Built-in QR Code scanner
The new iOS 12 comes with a built-in QR code scanner while in Android P, users will have to install third-party apps to do that.
You can play multiplayer AR games
Apple has added support for up to four players for multiplayer augmented reality games along with various other improvements in AR gaming which Android P lacks.
Extra security for USB accessories
It is a well-known fact that iOS has better security features when compared to Android. But this time Apple has upgraded its ‘USB restrict mode’ to prevent brute force attacks through USB accessories. Earlier, it took seven days after the last time your iPhone was locked to initialise restrict mode which essentially doesn’t allow any USB accessory to interact with your iPhone.
While making Memojis, iOS 12 also detects tongue movements so that users can add tongue expressions. Android P doesn’t have any such option.
Get to know what your kids are up to on different iOS devices
Apple’s latest iOS 12 update will allow users to get activity reports on managed accounts. This can help parents to keep track of their kid’s smartphone activities on a regular basis. Android P lacks this feature for getting reports on managed accounts.
